Over the past decade or so, social media has become increasingly popular among people of all ages. Thanks to online platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, it’s easier than ever to stay in touch with loved ones and meet new people. However, according to the New Orleans-based news outlet WDSU NewsChannel 6, social media also puts added pressure on people to look as youthful and attractive as possible in the photos they post of themselves on a regular basis.
“Everybody’s concerned about how they look, and everybody wants to look their best. And as we get older, it’s harder to do that,” 54-year-old Carla Boettner said in an interview with the source.
Boettner explained that she didn’t like what she saw in her Facebook photos, so she got Botox, fillers, and advanced fluorescent laser treatments to boost her self-confidence.
The news outlet refers to this trend as the “Facebook facelift,” and plastic surgeons say they have seen an uptick in people undergoing cosmetic procedures for reasons similar to Boettner’s.
“I think people are becoming much more aware of the way they look because they are seeing themselves online,” cosmetic surgeon Dr. Marilyn Pelias told the source. “People are posting Facebook photos. All of a sudden most of us are getting a much more day-to-day look at what we really look like.”
