It’s common to see stories in the news about women getting cosmetic surgery, but plastic surgeons throughout the United States have indicated that it’s becoming increasingly popular for men to undergo various cosmetic procedures. Statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reveal that plastic surgery among men jumped a notable 106 percent from 1997 to 2012.
Why are surgeries increasing among men?
“Men get surgery as a key tool to help them succeed,” Dr. Douglas Steinbrech, a Manhattan-based plastic surgeon, explained to Business Insider. “In a marketplace where looking fit, younger and more masculine is imperative, the better you look, the better your chances of ascending the corporate ladder […] Over the last three to five years, there’s been a huge boom is men’s aesthetic surgery.”
Dr. Steinbrech has broken the type of men who get plastic surgery down into four different categories:
- The “athletic dad,” who wants to look as good as he did in college, perhaps to match a spouse who has recently undergone cosmetic surgery
- The “bodybuilder,” who wants more muscular definition
- The “CEO or board member,” who want to eliminate signs of aging to boost his confidence
- The “male model,” who wants to focus on enhancing his jaw, abs and pectoral implants.
