Cosmetic surgery isn’t just for women anymore. According to the 2013 American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), men had more than one million cosmetic procedures. They accounted for a little over nine percent of the overall amount performed that year.
Non-surgical Botox treatments were the number one most performed cosmetic operation in 2013, with a total of over three million for the year. According to Men’s Journal, about 385,000 of these can be attributed to men.
Why Are Men Getting Botox?
Many of these men don’t just want to look younger, they want to appear fresher, especially Wall Street workers, according to Fortune.
The “Wall Street Wrinkle,” coined by NYC plastic surgeon Dr. Norman Rowe, is popular among many male Botox patients. They want to keep their wrinkles, just not all of them. They want to create an appearance of seniority and experience while also keeping an overall fresh and rejuvenated exterior.
According to Rowe, these Wall Street workers aren’t just getting facial treatments, but are injecting Botox in their hands and armpits as well. Eliminating sweaty palms and sweaty underarms can put a potential client at ease and make a worker appear more experienced and ready for business.
The Rising Popularity of Injectable Treatments
Both Botox and other injectables became more popular in 2013 with a 21 percent increase in procedures, according to ASAPS.
Many men are also receiving dermal filler injections, like Juvederm, according to New York City cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Paul Jarrod Frank. These injections can reduce or eliminate wrinkles, dark circles, and facial sagging.
The 2013 top five surgical procedures for men were liposuction, blepharoplasty, rhinoplasty, male breast reduction, and otoplasty, according to ASAPS.
