If you’re unhappy with a part of your face or body, why not change it? Studies show that plastic surgery is on the rise in the United States, as more and more people opt to make improvements to their overall appearance. That being said, once you decide to get breast implants, a facelift, or any other type of procedure, it’s important to make sure you select the right plastic surgeon. Here are a couple of things to consider before choosing a doctor:

Experience with a particular cosmetic procedure – If you’re getting breast augmentation, for example, you’ll want to choose a plastic surgeon who has plenty of experience with this particular procedure. Don’t be afraid to ask a doctor how many times he or she has performed a breast augmentation and whether any serious complications have ever arisen. You can even ask to see before-and-after photographs of previous patients who have undergone this procedure.

Training and credentials – “Because state laws permit any licensed physician to call him- or herself a ‘plastic’ or ‘cosmetic’ surgeon – even if he or she has not been trained as a plastic surgeon or has had no surgical training at all – prospective patients must select their doctor carefully,” states the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Not all plastic surgeons have the same background, so it’s important to confirm training and credentials before letting someone operate on you.
