As plastic surgery continues to become more popular, many wonder what the perfect age for undergoing a procedure is. The answer is easy, there isn’t one.
How Does Age Affect Plastic Surgery?
Each plastic surgery procedure comes with a different set of risks and benefits. Depending on a patient’s age, these will be heightened or lessened. During a consultation at The Lett Center, a range of factors that can affect your surgery will be discussed including age, overall health and desired outcome.
According to New Hampshire Magazine, plastic surgery for seniors is only just beginning. Due to advancements in the field, as well as longer life expectancies and better health, more people are living longer. Seniors are just one of many groups that are aware of the capabilities plastic surgery can have.
Who’s Getting Plastic Surgery?
Recent statistics from the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) indicate that women and men between the ages of 51 and 64 accounted for 24.6 percent of surgical and 32.9 percent non-surgical procedures of the more than 10 million performed in 2014.
Those ages 65 and older accounted for almost 8 percent of these surgeries and close to 11 percent of nonsurgical procedures. Compared to 2010, these numbers have increased greatly.
What Are The Most Popular Aesthetic Treatments for Seniors?
The most popular surgeries for seniors include liposuction, facelifts, eyelid lifts and tummy tucks. Others include breast augmentation forehead lifts, arm lifts and cheek augmentations.
What Other Treatments Are Becoming More Popular?
In addition to invasive surgical procedures, injections and other aesthetic procedures are also on the rise. With limited invasion of the body, injections such as Botox and Juvederm are being sought by seniors to erase fine lines, increase collagen production and create an overall younger appearance. In addition, skin rejuvenating procedures such as microdermabrasion treatments, chemical peels and laser skin resurfacing are also gaining traction among older people.
Seniors must remember though, that the aesthetic procedures mentioned above are not permanent, but rather, long lasting. Many have to return for periodic treatments to ensure appearances are kept.
Are There Other Risk Factors Besides Age?
Patient age is just one factor, and for many plastic surgeons, age is an indicator of what to look for in terms of health issues that can affect a surgery.
“It’s not the patient’s age that’s a limitation. It’s the co-morbidities, the other illnesses and medical conditions about the person,” says Dr. Bruce Topol, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
As you age, the likelihood of developing additional chronic conditions also increases.
How Can I Tell If Plastic Surgery Is Right For Me?
The following tips can help you determine whether or not plastic surgery will work for you:
- Be aware of your health status. Disclose any recent issues to your surgeon, no matter how big or small.
- Follow pre and post-care instructions carefully.
- Know that a procedure will not fix everything. Maintaining a healthy body image is a great way to ensure happiness with the outcome of the procedure as well.
