According to Modern Medicine, a new study suggests that botulinum toxin A, simply known as Botox, may be able to reduce pain and expedite expansions in breast reconstruction surgeries.

The study, published in the March 2015 edition of Aesthetic Surgery Journal, followed the patients for over a year afterward to track the results.

Methods of the Botox Uses Study

Researchers studied 30 patients undergoing mastectomies involving immediate expander or acellular dermal matrix reconstruction.

The patients in both the placebo injection and Botox injection groups were similar in terms of demographics, office visits, required narcotics and other factors.

Of the 15 patients that received 40 injections of Botox:

  • A significant increase in volume was noted during each visit.
  • Most suffered from less pain often associated with the procedure.
  • They had to take less painkillers and other medication.

Botox has been in the media recently for a host of reasons. It is often associated with cosmetic facial changes such as reducing the appearance of wrinkles, facial lines and crow’s feet in adults.

Other Little-Known Botox Uses

According to Tulsa’s Channel 8 news, Botox can also be used for common bladder issues and chronic migraines as well. Injected in two very different body areas, for two very different issues, Botox often has one major outcome: relief.

When Botox is injected into the bladder, it relaxes it, causing spasms and other spontaneous contractions from occurring throughout the day.

Both of these uses are currently FDA-approved. Other less common uses of Botox include helping stop excessive sweating and stopping eye spasms.

Botox Injections for Excessive Sweating

Many Australians, according to The Financial Review, are turning to Botox to manage their sweating habits. Excessive sweating can lead to a host of problems including social anxiety, health issues and an overall impact on happiness.

Although the injection takes about a week to work, when inserted near a sweat gland, it can block communication between the nerve and the local gland, stopping sweat in that area. Those that suffer from hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, can seek some form of relief in doing this.

Although Botox has numerous benefits for patients, it does have possible side effects that should be taken into consideration before being administered.

These side effects include:

  • Itchy, redness or pain at the injection site.
  • Problems swallowing, speaking or breathing.
  • Possible spreading to other body muscles causing blurred vision, drooping eyelids, loss of bladder control or muscle weakness.

The Lett Center has a range of injections available for patients other than Botox as well. These include Juvederm, Radiesse, Restylane, Perlane, Prevelle Silk and Sculptra. More information on each of these injections can be found on The Lett Center website.
