The idea of having a cosmetic procedure is exciting. But before you get wrapped up in your enthusiasm of looking and feeling better, make sure you ask your plastic surgeon the following questions:
Are you a board-certified plastic surgeon?
Many medical professionals see plastic surgery as a lucrative business and perform procedures like facial injections without the proper training. Your physician should be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Do you have any “before and after” pictures?
These photos should be of individuals who your doctor treated, not people from a magazine or brochure. If possible, you should try to meet with a previous patient in person to discuss their experience.
How often do you perform this procedure?
You don’t want an amateur making what could be permanent changes to your face and body. Doctors get better with practice, so you want to be working with one who is at ease doing different types of procedures.
What are all of my options?
Take advantage of your surgeon’s breadth of knowledge by asking about all of the options available. You may be surprised to learn that what you need to look your best might not be something that you had previously researched.
What happens after surgery?
The recovery process for a cosmetic procedure can last for a few days or up to several weeks. You need to know in advance if you’ll be able to keep up with follow-up care.
