For years, women have been turning to Botox to fix their fine lines and wrinkles, giving them a more youthful and refreshed appearance. Now an increasing number of men are getting with the program and realizing that Botox can benefit them as well.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over 400,000 men had Botox injections in 2012. This represents a seven percent jump over the previous year and a 300 percent increase over the last decade. Why are so many men getting Botox? The answer is simple, according to Dr. Tasha Shamlin. The Baton Rouge, Louisiana, physician and director of a medical spa told her local ABC affiliate WLOX that it is becoming more socially acceptable for men to openly voice their concerns about their looks.

“In the past it was considered non-macho to have these kind of things done, but now I think men want to feel and look just as good as women,” Dr. Shamlin told the news outlet. “We’re more into wellness. We’re into not just physically feeling better but making sure that outside matches the inside.”

Dr. Shamlin said that men are not just coming to her office for Botox. Many are expressing interest in being treated with dermal fillers and other less invasive techniques. She said that most of these men are looking for solutions that don’t require much recovery time and can be performed discretely.

Men or women who are considering any sort of cosmetic procedure should first consult with a plastic surgeon to explore all of their options. If you are interested in learning more about what Botox or other facial injections can do for you, don’t hesitate to contact The Lett Center today.
