Social media constantly demands and earns people’s attention. More and more individuals in a number of demographics are now using sites like Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Instagram, and TikTok to interact with friends and family, or just for entertainment.
Social media can be a great tool to connect with other people, enter entrepreneurship, promote yourself, learn valuable information, and research brands or products that you want to learn more about. However, social media may also be making us more self-conscious.
Increased Social Media Use and Concern For Appearance
Anyone who regularly uses social media should be familiar with the concept of a selfie. Social media is also all about the highlights of other people’s lives. It can be really easy to compare your day-to-day life, and day-to-day appearance, to the best of everyone else’s lives. And with that increased comparison, it gets easier and easier to feel down on yourself for not measuring up to what you see on other people’s feeds.
In the world of plastic surgery, this trend has had impactful ramifications, as more and more professionals are now saying that digitally savvy, selfie-takers are turning to plastic surgery to make themselves look better in photographs.
One Florida-based surgeon, Dr. Harold Bafitis, told WPTV, an NBC affiliate station in West Palm Beach, that he has noticed an inclination for people to come in looking for procedures that will make them look better in selfies.
“We’ve seen patients come forward, sharing with us that the way they look in Facetime, Skyping, selfies is not what they want to look like in the real world,” says Dr. Bafitis. The procedures that these patients undergo vary, but he says of the outcome “It’s not that much of a difference, but to them, it’s a massive difference.”
Can Plastic Surgery Help You Get The Perfect Selfie?
Well, it depends on what you’re looking for in terms of “the perfect selfie.” If you’re really committed to taking good pictures of yourself, by yourself, you might want to take a photography course or watch some tutorials on YouTube. Lighting, camera position, and more all play a big part in how your selfie will look.
One of the first things we do with patients is to interview and consult with them about their goals. If you already have a great complexion, face structure, and composition–we’ll tell you! And we’ll tell you whether or not you even should consider cosmetic surgery.
Again, if your features are perfectly fine, we can help you learn about some aesthetic skincare options. As well as some aesthetic treatments so you can maintain your good looks.
So Who Is Cosmetic Surgery For?
We usually offer and recommend cosmetic procedures to patients who have realistic expectations, who are in good health, and who have an overall good outlook. Potential patients who might need facial surgery would include people who have lost skin volume and quality and might need internal skin support as a result. We can do that with surgical, minimally invasive, and even some nonsurgical treatments.
