A tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, is the surgical removal of excess skin or fat deposits from the abdomen and the repositioning of abdomen muscles into a tighter form.
Tummy tucks are sought for numerous reasons including:
- Excessive amounts of skin in one area resulting from weight loss
- Inability to diet and exercise to improve weight
- Loss of skin elasticity or loose abdomen muscles (diastases) due to pregnancy
- Proper alignment of the abdomen muscles
- Removal of unsightly skin or fat
An ideal candidate for a tummy tuck wants the surgery done for themselves. The desire is to change for their own sense of peace or health, not for anyone else. They also have realistic expectations of what the outcome could be. It is not a substitute for weight loss or an exercise program.
The surgery involves making an incision above the pubic bone that can sometimes stretch to the back. The skin is stretched away from muscle tissue, and any excess skin is removed. The muscles of the abdomen are then tightened to create a well-defined waistline.
The procedure can last anywhere between one and five hours depending on the amount of work that has to be done, patient physiology and desired outcome.
Plenty of rest and limited movement are required for the first two weeks following surgery. After this time, be sure to monitor how you move and what physical activities you choose to partake in. For some patients, it can take up to a year for final body adaptations to occur due to changes made during the surgery.
Results can be permanent to an extent. Discuss your personal outcome and desires with a trained professional before undergoing the surgery.
