Now, the Daily Mail – a British newspaper – reports that this treatment is being applied to another graver medical concern: heart irregularities.
The media outlet states that a growing number of U.K. physicians are turning to Botox injections to treat irregular heartbeats, also known as atrial fibrillation.
“The toxin, which is commonly used as an anti-wrinkle treatment, is injected into fat pads surrounding the heart to paralyze the nerves triggering the faulty rhythm,” the source explains.
According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, even atrial fibrillation sufferers who don’t experience symptoms such as dizziness and fatigue may still face an elevated risk of stroke – largely due to blood clots – and other complications.
The Daily Mail reports that a clinical trial regarding the potential benefits of Botox against this heart condition is currently taking place at Columbia University, the results of which could determine if this method is adopted on a greater scale.
