MICRONEEDLING

WHAT IS MICRONEEDLING?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy (CIT), helps promote collagen production by making tiny punctures in the skin for your body to heal naturally. Microneedling can also be combined with other treatments like the ‘vampire’ facial that uses liquid gold. These aesthetics treatments are perfect for men and women seeking a plump, glowing skin texture.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE MICRONEEDLING?

Microneedling with the new & improved MicroPen® is safe & effective for all skin types. Our med spa nurses are professionally trained to use the only FDA microneedling pen on the market today in our Mt. Juliet & Lebanon, TN skincare clinic locations. The MicroPen EVO is intended to be used as a treatment to improve the appearance of facial acne scars in adults aged 22 years or older.

This innovative procedure isn’t limited to acne scars. You might consider microneedling if you’re concerned about:

  • Enlarged pores.
  • Fine lines or wrinkles.
  • Loose or crepey (thin and wrinkled) skin.
  • Mild scars, especially those from acne or burns.
  • Skin discoloration or uneven skin tone.
  • Stretch marks.

Additionally, microneedling can benefit those with certain medical conditions such as:

  • Alopecia areata (hair loss due to an autoimmune disease).
  • Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

In some cases, healthcare providers utilize microneedling to deliver drugs or vaccines directly into your skin, showcasing its versatility beyond cosmetic improvements. The microneedles may be embedded in a patch, which people can apply themselves, offering a convenient alternative to traditional methods.

This comprehensive approach ensures that microneedling addresses a wide variety of skin concerns and conditions, making it a versatile option for many individuals seeking rejuvenated skin.

WHO SHOULD AVOID MICRONEEDLING?

While microneedling offers impressive benefits, it’s not suitable for everyone. Consult your healthcare provider if any of the following applies to you:

  • Acne Problems: If you have active acne or are on medication for it, microneedling might aggravate the condition.
  • Blood Disorders: Anyone with a blood disorder or those taking anticoagulants should exercise caution due to increased bleeding risks.
  • Ongoing Cancer Treatments: Individuals undergoing chemotherapy or radiation should steer clear, as their skin may be more sensitive.
  • Frequent Skin Issues: Those prone to skin rashes, such as contact dermatitis, or recurrent cold sores should avoid this procedure.
  • Scar Formation: If you have a tendency to develop keloids (raised scars), microneedling may not be safe for your skin type.
  • Changing Skin Growths: Any moles, freckles, or other skin tags that change in shape, size, or bleed need to be assessed by a healthcare professional before considering microneedling.
  • Chronic Skin Conditions: Conditions like eczema or psoriasis can be exacerbated, making microneedling unsuitable.

Ensure to discuss any existing conditions with a qualified professional to determine if microneedling is right for you.

WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE?

While some areas are more sensitive than other, most people generally compare the sensation to sandpaper being moved across the skin. At The Lett Center, our trained nurses and aestheticians will likely apply topical anesthetic prior to treating to minimize any discomfort.

HOW LONG DOES THE PROCEDURE TAKE?

Once the treatment begins, it typically takes 15-30 minutes depending on the size of the area treated.

WHAT WILL MY SKIN LOOK LIKE AFTERWARD?

Some minor pinpoint bleeding is to be expected immediately post-treatment followed by bright redness which typically subsides after 2-3 days, depending on the level of treatment. Some patients may opt for a more aggressive treatment depending on their social downtime preference and skin needs.

In the days and weeks following your microneedling procedure, you might also notice a sensation of burning or tightness. It’s not uncommon for the skin to become dry or begin flaking, which can be alleviated with a good moisturizer.

Treatment Schedule and Results: Most people require multiple treatments, usually spaced 3 to 8 weeks apart, to achieve optimal results. Keep in mind that it can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months to fully see the benefits of the procedure.

Long-Term Care: Once the desired results are achieved, an annual session might be recommended to maintain the skin’s improved appearance. This ongoing care ensures that the skin continues to look its best over time.

By understanding both the immediate and long-term expectations, you can better prepare for your microneedling journey and enjoy the transformative effects it offers.

Understanding the Risks of Microneedling

Microneedling is generally deemed a safe and effective skin treatment, but it’s not without potential risks. It’s essential to be informed before undergoing the procedure. Here’s what you should know:

Possible Side Effects:

  • Bruising: Mild bruising may occur, especially on sensitive skin. This typically resolves within a few days.
  • Skin Irritation: Redness and swelling are common and usually subside quickly.
  • Pigmentation Changes: For those with darker skin tones, there’s a slight risk of temporary pigmentation changes.

Before deciding on microneedling, consider consulting with a qualified dermatologist to discuss any concerns, especially if you have underlying skin conditions.

When to Contact Your Healthcare Provider After Microneedling

Microneedling is generally a safe procedure, but it’s important to know when to reach out to your healthcare provider. Here are a few signs that warrant a call:

  • Prolonged Bleeding: If you experience bleeding that persists for more than a day, it’s wise to consult your provider.
  • Severe Blistering: Noticeable blisters on the treated area are not typical post-procedure and should be assessed by a professional.
  • Extended Swelling: If swelling doesn’t subside after a week, it could indicate an adverse reaction.

Additionally, keep an eye out for redness that refuses to fade or any signs of infection, such as pus or increasing pain. Your provider can offer guidance and potential treatment to ensure proper healing. Remember, it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your health.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

Because of its low-downtime, patients often opt for light MicroPen EVO treatments every 1-2 months simply out of a desire to maintain their appearance. However, if your goal is to resolve specific skin irregularities, your medical provider might suggest a series of 3+ treatments at 4-6 week intervals.

WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?

One of the most exciting perks of the MicroPen EVO is the immediate “glow” patients can see as soon as the procedure is finished. Visible changes to the skin develop over the course of several weeks. Results continue to improve up to six months after the treatment.

REASONS FOR CONSIDERING

  • Treats volume loss due to less elastin

  • Eliminates fine lines and wrinkles

  • Reduces acne scarring

  • Minimizes large pores

  • Evens skin tone

  • Improves the appearance of stretch marks

Micro-needling may sound a bit intense, no thanks to the word “needle” in its name. Luckily, the treatment is less painful than it sounds and is considered to be an effective way for building collagen, thickening the skin, and smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles.

STEP BY STEP PROCEDURE

First, an aesthetician will apply a numbing cream to the patient’s skin and let it sit for about 45 minutes. Next, the practitioner will gently roll a derma roller over the surface of the skin in various directions creating tiny holes in the skin’s surface. This process usually takes 20-30 minutes total. Immediately after the treatment, your skin will be red and tight. For best results, this procedure is recommended 3 times with a minimum separation time of 4 to 6 weeks in between treatments.

BENEFITS OF MICRONEEDLING

It is effective in stimulating collagen production. As we age, our collagen production depletes, resulting in saggy and loose skin. Microneedling stimulates the production of new collagen in a natural way.

  1. Newly produced collagen act as fillers, smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles.
  2. Acne scars are less noticeable and reduced. Collagen production is necessary to improve the skin’s appearance.
  3. It helps improve skin texture.
  4. Stretch marks become less visible as collagen restores the appearance.

RECOVERY PROCESS

Patients generally return to their normal activities immediately after the procedure, however following the post-procedure guidelines will dramatically reduce the length and intensity of the recovery period. Patients should avoid engaging in heavy physical exercise, applying cosmetics, or laying down flat for a minimum of 4 hours after the injections. It is also advisable to avoid rubbing or massaging the injected area for at least 24 hours.

The use of skin care products after microneedling make a significant difference in prolonging your results. Find out which skincare products work best for you during a consultation with one of our skincare specialists.
