There are many health benefits associated with tummy tuck procedures.

Following a weight-reduction surgery, massive weight loss or a long-term problem with unsightly skin or fat deposits, many people around the country choose to enhance their body and self confidence with a tummy tuck procedure. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the number of tummy tuck procedures has risen 87 percent from 2000 to 2014.

The Wall Street Journal’s Laura Landro wrote about the reasons people have for pursuing a tummy tuck. Landro explained that “many people who finally reach a goal of losing 50 or 100 pounds or more through diet and exercise or bariatric surgery [a procedure used reduce stomach size] find themselves with a new and frustrating dilemma: sagging extra skin and stubborn deposits of belly fat.”

“The number of tummy tuck procedures has risen 87 percent.”

While cosmetic or personal factors are more than enough reason to get a tummy tuck, Jeremy White wrote for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons that there are several medical benefits gained from this procedure as well.

Relief from back pain or bad posture
Following years of being overweight or multiple pregnancies, many people develop weak abdominal muscles, which can cause bad posture and serious back pain. Carrying extra weight in the stomach area causes these muscles to become distended, making it nearly impossible to tighten up through normal exercise and dieting methods. Through a tummy tuck procedure, these muscles are tightened, where afterward many notice that their posture improves due to less pressure being placed on the spine. This usually leads to a reduction in back pain as a result.

After a pregnancy
Following a traditional birth, some women suffer from a bladder control problem known as Stress Urinary Incontinence. While this problem does not require surgery to fix in every situation, many found relief following a tummy tuck procedure. During the surgery, doctors create a bladder obstruction, therefore alleviating the issue.
