More young adults are undergoing plastic surgery procedures.

What is the current state of facial plastic surgery in the U.S.? According to The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), more young adults are undergoing aesthetic procedures than ever before.

What are the general findings of the study?

During 2015, 64 percent of AAFPRS members saw an increase in cosmetic surgery and other injectable treatments in patients under the age of 30.

“The prevalence of non-invasive procedures like lasers, peels, and injections are making it even more appealing for young people to dip their toe into aesthetic enhancements before aging is even a concern,” said Edwin Williams III, President of the AAFPRS.

Why is this change happening now?

“82 percent said celebrities were a major influence on patient’s decisions to have plastic surgery.”

There are a few reasons why Millennials are choosing to undergo plastic surgery procedures. The rise of selfies and social media is one of the most prevalent. As young adults and 20-somethings continue to post photos on a range of websites, more focus is being placed on their appearance and how others may perceive them. For some, something as slight as a wrinkle or two here and there, or large bags under the eyes, can be cause for scheduling a consultation right away.

Other experts believe this change is being caused by celebrities and their power over the general public. As ads, magazine spreads and television shows continue to highlight the importance of young, rejuvenated skin, impressionable young people will continue to make changes. Of the surgeons polled, 82 percent said celebrities were a major influence on patients’ decisions to have plastic surgery during 2015.

What are the most popular procedures?

The most common procedures patients asked for according to this survey include:

  • Natural-looking rhinoplasty, 74 percent
  • Combined surgical and nonsurgical procedures, 72 percent
  • Eyelid procedures, 71 percent

AAFPRS experts agree, 2016 holds more noninvasive procedures in addition to an earlier approach to natural rejuvenation changes and techniques.
