The warmer weather, sunshine and clear skies signifies the beginning of beach season, also known as bathing suit season.
Bathing suit season brings about a host of thoughts, often including a desire for a different physical appearance. Many women decide to undergo a breast related procedure after seeing other women at the beach, models in bathing suits or preconceived thoughts of their body.
The Lett Center offers three different types of breast procedures. These include:
- Breast augmentation: Also known as a mammoplasty, this procedure accentuates the size and shape of a woman’s breasts. The procedure enhances the shape, symmetry and volume of the breasts as well. It also enables reconstruction of the breasts after an injury or mastectomy.
- Breast Lift: Also known as a mastopexy, a breast lift is a procedure that raises and reshapes sagging breasts. As a woman ages, breasts may lose their natural shape and firmness due to an increase of elasticity in the skin. The procedure firms, elevates and creates natural suppleness. It can also be used to re-align the nipples or areolas if they point downward or to the side of the body.
- Breast Reduction: A breast reduction enhances the breasts to make them smaller, lighter and firmer. Women undergo this procedure to alleviate back, neck or shoulder pain caused by their size, to create a more proportionate body shape and to decrease painful bra strap marks and rashes as a result of larger breasts. Others cite restriction of physical activity as a reason to have the procedure performed.
Although these three surgeries enable very different results, they each share an almost identical recovery process. Post-operative care calls for plenty of rest and limited movement for best results. After these surgeries, bandages are applied to minimize movement. When the bandages are removed, a specialized surgical bra must be worn for several weeks.
Although pain and mild discomfort has been associated with the surgery, after effects vary patient to patient. Pain can be treated with an oral medication.
In addition, the surgery can have a different affect on each individual patient, and as such, varying aftercare instructions and suggestions will be made during the initial consultation.
Even though a breast augmentation, lift or reduction may be known as a women’s surgery, many men are also undergoing the procedure as well. Similar to women, men are also fueled by beach season, the media and social expectations to fit a specific body mold. Although no body is perfect or imperfect, many see this type of procedure as a way to obtain a more rejuvenated, youthful appearance.
According to ASAPS statistics, male breast reduction has increased by more than 33 percent. Male plastic surgery procedures have increased by more than 273 percent since 1997.
These masculine makeovers are also done to enhance career developments, attract potential partners and regain self-esteem.
