Alton Brown is one of the Food Network’s biggest stars, and also one of its thinnest, but the 52-year-old didn’t always have his current svelte physique. About six years ago, the celebrity chef managed to lose an amazing 50 pounds, and — even more remarkable — has since kept it off.

US Weekly reported in 2012 that Brown said he was shocked one day when he saw himself on a TV monitor at work, not having realized how overweight he had become.

“I thought whatever shape I’m going to be in, I better be in by the time I hit 50, because they say when you turn 50, you’re battling to just keep it,” Brown told source omg! at the time. “I turned 50 this year and I’m in better shape than I was when I was 20.”

Pretty inspiring stuff for those of us who aren’t getting any younger! So just how does he do it? The chef tells The Huffington Post that he eats the following:

Daily:

  • Dark, leafy greens
  • Fruits
  • Whole Grains

Twice weekly:

  • Avocados
  • Oily fish
  • Sweet potatoes

Weekly (at the most):

  • Alcohol
  • Pasta
  • Red meat
  • Sweets

Never:

  • Fast food
  • Soda

Brown also said on an episode of talk show The View that he eats a lot of sardines, which Serious Eats suggests consuming in an avocado sandwich. The meal’s healthy fats will fill you up and stave off hunger.
