If you’re looking for some new techniques to incorporate in your beauty routine, you’ll be surprised at how much you can accomplish with a jar of coconut oil.

As one Prevention Magazine article notes, “Coconut oil is used in many natural beauty products, and for good reason: It’s naturally antibacterial and antifungal, it’s an excellent moisturizer, it can penetrate hair better than other oils and, well, it smells like cookies.”

Here’s a look at just a few of the ways you can use coconut oil:

  • Condition hair – A number of conditioners you’ll find in the store contain coconut oil, but you can also apply it directly to your locks. Comb a quarter-sized amount through your hair and then pull your tresses into a loose bun before you go to bed. Be sure to lay a towel on your pillow or wear a shower cap so the oil doesn’t harm your bedding.
  • Remove makeup – Coconut oil can remove even the strongest waterproof mascara. Just dip a cotton ball into your jar and then gently sweep it over your eyes.
  • Soothe dry hands – Are your hands feeling dry from months of cool winter air? If so, coconut oil can be a great natural substitute for hand cream. “I keep a jar of organic extra virgin coconut oil by the kitchen sink and put a little on after washing my hands to keep them soft and moist,” Dr. Tieraona Low Dog of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine said in an interview with the magazine.
