If you are thinking of trying dermal fillers, there is a lot to know! Even if you are a veteran of this cosmetic procedure, new products emerge all the time that may be an even better option for you. Each cosmetic filler product will have a different look or feel, and this varies depending on where it is injected into the body. With fillers, you can achieve full cheeks, plump and reshaped lips, a reduction of wrinkles, and more. You can choose between more pronounced enhancements or go for a more natural look with the latest cosmetic injectables on the market.

Let’s get started!

Why do people choose fillers over plastic surgery?

Fillers are a less invasive way to change the contours of the face or to reduce the marks of aging. There is no surgery involved with injectables, and downtime is none to minimal. Dermal fillers can help if you have any of these cosmetic issues you are interested in correcting.

  • Enhance lip size and contour for fuller lips
  • Smooth out creases in the chin
  • Smooth out wrinkles and lines like smile lines and marionette lines
  • Restore volume to the face, usually in the cheeks or temples
  • Correct facial symmetry in the nose, chin, jaw, or other areas

What are fillers made with?

When getting fillers, it is essential to get FDA approved cosmetic products. These products are only available to licensed physicians or board certified cosmetic surgeons. If your doctor is recommending another kind of product, beware! You may have heard horror stories of doctors injecting other substances into the skin other than approved products with catastrophic and dangerous results.

Here are the approved ingredients on the market for use as a cosmetic filler:

  • Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA): This is a substance that is found naturally in our bones. CaHA is administered as a gel, and it is generally thicker than a hyaluronic acid filler. This filler has some advantages that others don’t. Calcium Hydroxylapatite fillers are longer-lasting, in the 12-month range for most patients. They also can boost natural collagen production, which will enable your skin to heal and look younger naturally over time.
  • Hyaluronic Acid (HA): This is also a naturally occurring substance found in your skin. HA works to plump and hydrate skin, which is very beneficial for aging. These fillers are a softer gel. The effects of these do not last as long, generally about 6-12 months, depending on each patient. Hyaluronic fillers are often paired with lidocaine to decrease pain during injection.
  • Poly-L-lactic Acid: While this substance is one not naturally occurring in the body, it is safe to use. A common use besides fillers for this injectable is as dissolvable stitches. This is a gel filler that can stimulate your own collagen production. Interestingly, the filler is not what stays in your skin. The filler dissolves out within days, and improvements are from your skin repairing itself.
  • Autologous Fat Injections (fat grafting): This substance comes straight from your own body. Fat injections using your own fat are safe from side effects like an allergic reaction. This method involves surgery or liposuction to harvest the fat, which is more invasive, but the results can last for years. Specialized training is needed for this method as it is much more involved.
  • Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA): While this is a synthetic substance, it has shown to be a safe and tolerable injectable material. PMMA will form into a ball beneath the skin, and this is what gives structure to the enhanced area. These fillers also contain collagen to firm the skin.
