Undergoing a plastic surgery procedure can be life changing for many patients. The ability to achieve a desired appearance is both a boost to self-confidence and a manner in which many choose to take back control of their bodies.
An important factor to remember though, when choosing to have a procedure done, is picking who will actually be performing the surgery.
Going to the wrong plastic surgeon can cause severe health problems and place you at risk for disease, complications and in some cases, even death.
Medical tourism, traveling to another country to have a procedure done, may be cheaper than undergoing the procedure in the U.S. But at what cost?
In April 2014, Mexican authorities closed 10 cosmetic surgery offices in Tijuana for failing to comply with health regulations. This action was taken only after a young Australian woman died during a liposuction procedure, according to CBS KSEQ News.
When choosing a plastic surgeon, be sure to keep the following four tips in mind. This is not an exhaustive list, and more information can be found here.
- Board certification: Board certification ensures that the surgeon who is completing your surgery has both the accreditation and the experience necessary to complete your surgery.
- Emotional connection: As you will be spending a lot of time with your surgeon, ensure you have a good relationship, completed by trust and understanding, before undergoing a procedure.
- Experience: Has your surgeon performed this procedure before? Has he or she helped patients similar to your body type?
- Safety: What does the facility look like? Does it appear clean and well kept? What about total cost, is everything outlined and easy to understand? Be sure to ask about the facility accreditation, as well.
